Individuals have some worries about the genetic well-being of the next offspring and at times the gender of the next offspring as a result of family planning and ecological factor, genetic and psychological factors. In recent times individuals going through IVF treatment procedure by having an option to choose the offspring’s gender. Though, the PGD, that is been carried out as a technique for gender selection as it can be implemented exclusively for purposes of genetic screening.

PGD Genetic screening with 99% success

As it is acknowledged all around the globe, new technologies being developed for IVF treatments procedure and using these innovative technologies, the latest and current techniques are implemented to assist individuals to have healthy offspring. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is one of these modern procedures that before pregnancy, genetically damaged structured embryos and genetic irregularities that may occur in the offspring are detected.

By means of this all-inclusive genetic examination, Individual will able to go through with the pregnancy procedures with easiness without having any doubt about the gender and genetic healthiness of their next offspring.

If the male or female parent has inherited genetic illnesses, an irregularity may occur in the genetic structure of the embryo caused by the male or female parents’ reproductive cells, there may not be a possibility of avoiding it after it is transmitted, or worse if it comes about with serious health complications. Specifically, in individuals who possess a genetic problem in their family, who experience constant and repeated miscarriage, who have earlier had offspring with chromosomal faults, Preimplantation genetic diagnosis analysis makes available extremely useful clarifications to patients.

This technique that in recent times has been implemented as a gender selection procedure, is a genetic diagnostic technique that is suitably carried out in a laboratory setting, so it is required of people to go through an IVF treatment procedure even if their previous offspring was naturally born.

By means of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, it is probable to discover:

  • The next offspring gender, especially where inherited sicknesses associated with the sex chromosome is identified,

  • Usual chromosome abnormalities like Down syndrome, Turner Syndrome etc.

  • Single gene disorders like Cystic fibrosis, Thalassemia, Muscular Dystrophies, Sickle Cell Anemia etc. (advanced)

Cyprus PGD - Preimplantation genetic diagnosis Treatment Phases

The PGD treatment procedure commences with comprehensive examinations on both the male and female parent who are undergoing PGD procedure.

During the second or third day of the female parent’s menstrual cycle, the female parent follicle is being prepared for the start of the treatment process. This egg development procedure can be executed close to where the parent resides. In the course of this phase, the female eggs are developed with numerous injections. Injection usage duration can be for approximately ten to twelve days. These injections solely deliver follicle growth throughout that phase. They cause no additional effect or interrupt menstrual cycle.

The egg development phase is concluded via a particular injection named triggering injection. This injection enables the developing eggs to be prepared for the egg processing.

At this phase of the PGD procedure, about thirty-six hours after the triggering injection, the entire follicles fashioned are gathered by an IVF specialist. Since the egg collection procedure is done using a very small dosage of anesthesia, the female parent does not experience any pain or uneasiness. This procedure exhaust around ten to fifteen minutes depending on the quantity of eggs. After the procedure, the female instantly recuperates and carry on her normal activities within one to two hours.

In the same period of egg collection, spermatozoa are collected from the male parent and the finest sperm cells are carefully chosen by embryologists underneath a special microscope. Using the carefully chosen sperm cells, the developed egg cells of the female are directly fertilized via ICSI - microinjection technique.

After fertilization, the embryos are kept to mature inside some special incubators for three days. Embryos may go through this procedure in an incubator or in an Embryoscope, this depends on the choice of the parents.

On the third day of fertilization, single-cell biopsies are collected from the matured embryos and PGD techniques are implemented to collect the cells.

After getting the genetic outcomes, the finest quality and fit embryos are transmitted to the female’s womb on the fifth day of the fertilization. Embryo transmission procedure, go together with ultrasound, is an easy process. It is painless and similar to an ultrasound scan. The duration is for around five to ten minutes and the female is completely conscious and monitor the transmission of the offspring into her womb.
